The Story Behind: A Simple Life

They taught us in pharmacy that the best medicine for the average illness must be cost effective. It must be able to effectively fulfil its intention while presenting at an affordable cost. It was something so simple, yet it had a profound impact on my life. You see, cost effective to me meant the value needs to be worth the cost.

I use this life changing lesson every time I buy groceries, technology and even skin care. I also love using this when it comes to leaving the house and who I spend my time with.
Is the value going to be worth my time?

So how does this tie in with simplicity? Simplicity by definition is “easy, uncomplicated, presenting no difficulty”. To me, when my gut is screaming to do something, that may terrify me or excite me, but its telling me ‘you need to do this’ – that’s simplicity. Listening to ourselves, our minds and bodies. It is the life we choose to have based on the value it brings to our souls. And it’s important to know, everyone’s simplicity is different.

I’ve spent the last 10 years constantly making decisions to live a simple life. Here are some of the things I’ve learnt and relentlessly practice:

  1. Be a good person and do the right thing.
  2. Treat others how you want to be treated, always. And remember that when others are being mean or not good people that they could be hurting.
  3. Constantly make a grateful list. It is a warm reminder that sometimes what you’re already grateful for is enough.
  4. You don’t need a lot of clothes, you just need good quality timeless pieces that can last at least ten years. And if you haven’t worn something in over a year, give it away.
  5. The most nourishing food is homemade with the simplest ingredients.
  6. Value for money > price. (I would buy a more than average priced shampoo because the results are 200% more value)
  7. Memories made with the ones you love are more important than gifts.
  8. Falling in love with the small things, like watching the sunrise, eating good food, watching a good movie are the purest forms of living.
  9. You don’t need the latest iPhone every year. I promise, you will be okay.
  10. Material things do not matter once you die.

When wrapping my head around what to call my company, A Simple Life, just made sense, because it’s the kind of life I truly want to live. And taking it simpler even further to my Arabic origin: Hayaat Basita (meaning Simple Life).

Life isn’t complicated, and simple means something different to each person.
I encourage you to find your simple and live your simple. Believe me, it’s incredibly liberating to not fall into the expectations of this world.
